The Department of Human-Centered Computing, School of Informatics and Computing, seeks an Adjunct Faculty to teach INFO H517 Visualization Design, Analysis, and Evaluation, a course on data visualization. This graduate course is offered in the Spring and/or Fall semester to students in Data Science and Human-Computer Interaction. Depending on the enrollment, we also may offer the course during summer sessions.
Course Description
The course focuses on interactive data visualization and visual analytics. The course covers theoretical topics and practical skills, including human visual perception, visualization design, interaction techniques, and evaluation methods. As part of the course, students develop technical expertise in modern data visualization systems (specifically D3 and Tableau). Students also undertake multi-week projects in which they design, create, and critique their own visualizations.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and deliver online (synchronous or asynchronous) lectures, assignments and projects over a 15-week semester
- Administer assessments of course learning outcomes, e.g. grading assignments, quizzes and exams
- Provide after-class support for students, e.g. holding office hours and responding to student inquires via video calls or emails
- Encourage student progress and retention
Qualifications
- Deep commitment to student learning and success
- Master’s degree in a closely related field, such as Computer Science, Data Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or other related fields.
- Ability to teach classes online effectively
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, R, or PHP. Expertise in data visualization systems is a strength.
- Significant industry experience and solid technical knowledge in data visualization systems (e.g., D3, Tableau, PowerBI, Python, R)
