LIS-S 223 Genealogy and Local History Resources

  • Delivery: Online

    • This course introduces information tools for family and community history with an emphasis on U.S. genealogical tools, including census and military records. It covers city, county, and state historical resources.

    Learning Outcomes

    • Describe the current state of major genealogical information for the United States in archival, print-published, digitized, and data-managed formats.
    • Create a five-generation family tree. Students do not need to use their own family tress for this project; the families of public figures can be used.
    • Understand and critique key legal and ethical issues in genealogy and local historical research, including copyright, privacy, identity control, and public vs. private recordkeeping.
    • Describe, for one U.S. state or non-U.S. nation, the major resources for local historical information including census, political, and military information sources.
    • Analyze technological tools for genealogy and local history information retrieval and information management.
