Return of Aetheria: Rise of Nether marks the end of the game series from the School of Informatics and Computing production course
The students of the New Media N485 class in the Media Arts and Science program unveiled the last of the three part series Return of Aetheria: Rise of Nether, the multi-platform, alternate reality game, at Indy PoPCon, June 26-28 at the Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis.
“It has been a great experience for the students. They got a taste of a real-world project, and how much that goes into it. They spent many hours, as did faculty, getting it ready, everything from character development and strategy to artwork, and integrating the technology. A lot of hard work and it was over in just a few short days,” said Mathew Powers, professor of the N485 class.
The second in the series Return of Aetheria: War of Realms was introduced at PoPCon last year, and ended with the Earth Realm in chaos and deceit. In the finale, ‘Rise of Nether’, it is up to the player to master an element, help destroy Espir and Nether, and take back the realms!
The game, played on many platforms, included alternate reality this year and involved mini-games and quests that took you from the main Return of Aetheria booth, outside to sites all around the convention. There were over 300 registered to play this year, up from last year. Prizes were given out many times during the course of the game and there was a create-your-own-bundle prize for the four highest scoring players.
