Biography
An ongoing study of languages (French, German, Spanish, and Finnish) has served William Helling well in his work dealing with information architecture. He examines how to accommodate the international user experience on websites, and the labels we use (textual and iconic) to convey information to website users.
Helling has received a Fulbright Scholar award for 2013, 2020, and 2022 for Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki, Finland, where he has taught and lectured on his project of improving business services with information technology. IU awarded him a Global Classroom Fellowship for Spring 2021.
A lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Science at IUPUI, he previously worked as an adjunct for both IU Bloomington and IUPUI, teaching Information Architecture and Library Systems, among other courses.
Helling also has served since 1998 as a public librarian in various roles, including Systems Librarian and Reference Department Head.
He has published and presented on a variety of topics, such as film interpretations of literature; French 19-century exploration of Australia; digitization of library historical resources; website usability and accessibility; and technology in libraries. Helling has gained much experience in library system software and how it works with other technologies such as RFID; he also explores the integration of library system software with eBooks and similar third-party services.
