Remote Computer Lab Access

When classes go 100% virtual after Thanksgiving, the IT building will be locked. To access software available in the Luddy computer classrooms, Luddy students can remotely connect using a Remote Desktop (RDP) client.

The labs can only accommodate a single connection per computer.  Due to the nature of RDP connections, some applications’ performance may be negatively impacted, especially those that are graphics-intensive.

How to connect to the Luddy Computer Classrooms using RDP

To access Luddy classroom computers using RDP from off-campus, you must first connect to the IU SSL VPN using the Pulse Secure client.

Connecting from a Windows 10 PC

  1. In the search box on the taskbar, type Remote Desktop Connection, then select Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. In the Remote Desktop Connection window, type the name of the PC you want to connect to using the following format, “in-info-ComputerName.ads.iu.edu” where ComputerName represents the name of the computer. The computer names in IT 255 are 255-01 through 255-43, and the computers in IT 257 are named 257-01 through 257-39. Click the Connect button.
  3. When prompted, enter your IU username and password. Click the OK button.

The RDP connection should then initiate. If someone else is already logged into the computer, you will receive a notice to that effect. Please try another computer.

When you finish using a computer, please log off so it will be available to someone else.

Connecting from a Mac

Before connecting, you will need to download and install the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10. It is the macOS version of the Remote Desktop Connection that comes in Windows 10.  The application is free and can be downloaded from the Mac App Store.

Add a Remote Desktop connection on macOS:

  1. Open the “Microsoft Remote Desktop” application.
  2. In the Connection Center, click +, and then click Desktop.
  3. Enter the following information:
    • PC name – Type the fully qualified domain name of the computer you are connecting. Using the following format, “in-info-ComputerNumber.ads.iu.edu” where ComputerNumber represents the number of the computer. The computer numbers in IT 255 are named 255-01 through 255-43, and the computers in IT 257 are named 257-01 through 257-39.
    • User Account – Add your IU username using the following format, ADS\Username. The “ADS\” indicates you are logging in with an IU domain account and not a local account on the computer.
  4. Click Save.

To start the connection, double-click it.

When you finish using a computer, please log off so it will be available to someone else.
