Only approved applicants are allowed access to MARLA. Guests are not permitted at any time, unless with the permission of an attending professor.
No food or drink in MARLA. Exceptions may be made with the consent and supervision of faculty. At no time will any food or drink be allowed beyond the designated orange boundary of the computer area.
Participants will not use computers for personal use or unapproved projects.
No one may use MARLA without attending a mandatory orientation session. Participants must attend the orientation session for each semester, regardless of previous orientation session attendance.
No disabling, covering, and/or other tampering with security cameras is allowed. Doing so will be grounds for immediate and permanent revocation of MARLA access.
Anyone granting access to the lab to an unauthorized person or persons will have his/her MARLA access revoked for the remainder of that semester. After the second infraction of this policy, access to MARLA will be permanently revoked.
Once an application is approved, this agreement will act as a binding contract on personal behavior and use of the space.
Quiet hours will be observed except during regularly scheduled open hours, which will be posted each semester. Open hours are available only to approved applicants.
When more than one person is in the lab, headphones must be used unless all parties using the labs give consent and only during designated open hours.
Equipment must be used in a professional manner. Care must be taken to assure the longevity of the equipment by referring to the posted equipment check-list as a guide. Maintaining a general state of tidiness is expected from all MARLA users.
Any time MARLA is open for public functions a designated faculty or staff member will be present to monitor the proceedings.
The primary applicant is required to provide the Steering Committee with the following documents by the deadlines outlined in the orientation session:
Learning Outcomes and Goals prior to project commencement
Midterm evaluation of progress and attainment of stated goals
Post Project Assessment (if applicable, or end of semester assessment if project is ongoing) of projected learning outcomes and goals
Optional evaluation of the MARLA facilities and experience
Shopright Privilege: IUPUI and the Luddy Indianapolis maintain the right to publicly display any and all work generated on MARLA computers for academic or promotional purposes. The creators maintain all copyrights and ownership of files created on MARLA computers. For more information please consult the Luddy Indianapolis Student Services.
All finished projects generated as a result of MARLA affiliation must include a credit and acknowledgement of the Luddy Indianapolis Media Arts & Science Research and Learning Arcade
All MARLA applications must be initiated by faculty or a staff member. The primary applicant on application form must be faculty or a staff member. Each person working in MARLA must submit an application.
The MARLA Steering Committee will review all projects submitted for consideration.
Application decisions made by the Committee will be made in a timely manner and reported to all applicants.
The Steering Committee will make all decisions on awarding project access to the labs.
All decisions by the Steering Committee are final.
Access to MARLA is for one semester at a time. Projects extending beyond one semester are subject to review for extension.
All projects submitted for review must have a faculty mentor or participant active in the project.
Applications will be reviewed by the Steering Committee each semester. If a project is proposed after the beginning of the semester, it will be considered for approval as space in MARLA allows.
All project managers, or a designated representative for each project, will submit a midterm project report to the MARLA steering committee and the faculty mentor/participant must sign off on the report prior to submission to the Steering Committee. The deadline for submission of this report will be included in the orientation session at the beginning of each semester.
Application for the use of MARLA is open to all members of the IUPUI community.
Project files stored on MARLA computers are subject to periodic maintenance and files stored on the hard drives may be removed, therefore each user is responsible for maintaining personal, original copies of files.
Preference will be given to projects that cover the following topics: alpha order with subcategories

Human Computer Interaction (HCI)
Topics outside the scope of those listed above will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Preference will be given to applicants in the following categories:
Junior/Senior standing (as verified by Student Services)
Students in good standing (academic probation, equipment checks, disciplinary issues)
Freshman/Sophomores with faculty mentor/participant recommendation
Applicants other than listed above will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Access to MARLA will be shared and divided among approved project participants on a first-come-first-served basis. The Steering Committee reserves the right to limit access and assign lab time in the case of over-crowding during peak use times.
Rendering of large files will be reserved for designated rendering times.
Allegations of abuse of any policies or rules concerning the use of/or access to MARLA will be reviewed by the Steering Committee and appropriate actions will be taken.
Serious infractions, such as damage or theft, will be dealt with immediately and access to the lab will be revoked until the Steering Committee can convene to discuss proper disciplinary action.
